The July Engineering Echo Newsletter

Are you missing the heat?

It’s always cool here at Unit 5 so sometimes visitors have stayed a while when we had the heatwave! So before we enter the 8th month of the year, what’s the news from inside and outside of Bennett Engineering?

July Engineering Echo

Small yet mighty projects

This month we’ve been working on lots of detailed design work for client’s projects. We’ve also completed some manufacturing and assembly work on some small equipment that has needed perfect precision.

And as you can see a new face in one picture, we’ve welcomed Eddie Simpson into the business for a summer internship. Eddie is completing a mechanical engineering masters at Cambridge University and was looking for some hands on experience in his home city. It’s been a pleasure working alongside Eddie and he’s made a great impact here in just a few weeks. And he says he is learning lots which is great!

Back to the projects, each of them have relied on the tolerances being spot on, and there’s been a mix of materials in for one of the items. It’s always a feel good when they fit together like a hand in a glove (which we’re pleased to report they did) and then held together when put into place for the purpose they were designed for. A bit cryptic but you know us – we like to sign the NDAs so we can’t talk about your project properly.

We will share more on one of these projects in August after the sign off so keep your eyes peeled!

It starts on the board

If you’ve worked with us before you know we like to follow a tried and tested process for starting your project.

Our starting point is the board.

Now you might not be able to understand exactly what Craig and Eddie are looking at here, that’s fine, you don’t need to.

But when we are in concept stage and coming up with solutions a quick sketch and discussion with the team (yes Seleena included) makes such a big difference.

And sometimes sketches can stay up on the board for a few days so people can ponder, write something else, make a mark or have a lightbulb moment.

So we’re sticking to our process because it ensures the best outcome for your projects and that’s really important to us.

Based in Derby

We’re sure you know by now that Bennett Engineering are based in Derby, which some might say is the heart of the East Midlands!

In the latest BDO / MAKE UK report for 2025 they identify the following ‘The East Midlands is the UK’s eighth-largest region in terms of gross value add (GVA). The East Midlands economy accounts for 5.7% of the UK’s total output.’ They also say that East Midland’s based manufacturers confidence is high despite all the challenges we’ve seen over recent times.

Here on our Industrial Estate we have some amazing small manufacturers around us who make their products with complete precision. And since we’ve been based here in Derby we’ve certainly visited a lot more Derbyshire based manufacturers who are doing amazing things.

We’ve rounded up how proud we are to be in AND serving the manufacturing sector from here in the East Midlands in our latest blog: East Midlands Manufacturing: a dynamic sector driving regional success – Bennett Engineering
